These colours have been developed by Rachel Byass for Fired Art Designs.

Colour-2-Clay was born from us using more clay in the studio and the fact that you can colour your pot direct from the wheel. This has had an impact on schools in particular, as they like the fact that they only have to pay for one visit.

 

The facts about clay colours are

 

Colours being used on clay

  • They are designed to go directly onto clay known as Greenware and have a firing range 03 to 6 (temperature 1086/ 1100, colour shade will alter in a stoneware firing). All you do is make the clay pot, dry it off to leather hard so it won’t bend when it is being painted and then paint the pot. Dry a little to the touch between coats. If you want a really opaque look use up to 3 coats, we mainly do 1 to 2 coats and in stroke work only one for a solid look. You can do as little as one coat as the pigment is of the very best strength and quality as well as a little clay in it making it opaque.

 

Colours being used on bisque

  • Although the colour was made for use on clay it will go onto bisque. If you fire it into the bisque first you will find the result quite amazing very strong and opaque and you can even put light on top of dark such as white on black because of the clay content being opaque. You can you a brush on glaze on top of the clay paints on bisque once dry and only fire once and you will find it works well. If you use dipping glaze on the unfired bisque you may occasionally need to re-glaze and re-fire depending on the make you are using as it can absorb the glaze.

 

Other facts about clay colours  

  • All the colours can be mixed together to make other colours.
  • The clay colour is ideal for hand prints as you only stamp the hands once and the colour will be strong enough and show all the life lines.
  • The colour can be used in slip.

In a jug of clay slip put a few teaspoons of clay-2-colour on the top of the slip use a knife and cut in and out of the colour to make it marbleized.  Pour the slip into the mould carefully and roll it around to coat the whole mould with a thin layer of marbleizing slip. Leave for 2 minutes and then pour and discard the slip as it will be coloured.  Wait 5 minutes then pour uncoloured slip into the same jar for a further 10-15 minutes depending on the thickness you need of the finished marbleized pot. This is called Agateware which is quite beautiful creating lovely coloured patterns on the surface of the clay object (see pic below). For best results use a mould with only one bottom part so you don’t have a seam line down the side or use a new mould that is not worn out.

  • Another great technique is Sgraffito (see pic below). All you do is make your clay object, paint it with 2 to three coats of Clay-2-Colour paint and then use the Sgraffito tool to cut through the colour to the white clay below.
  • General painting with the clay colours results in very vibrant art work all in one lesson.

Fire to Stoneware  cone 6 the colours will change shade a little but are stable
